Long wait for Rooney recovery
Wayne Rooney may not recover from a knee injury in time for Euro 2016, Express Sport understands.

Manchester United’s captain suffered the problem during the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss at Sunderland last weekend.

He has been forced to wear a protective brace after damaging his knee ligaments.

And it is feared he would require surgery if the brace proves ineffective.

Surgery could rule the 30-year-old out for the rest of the season and force him to miss England’s two friendlies next month.

The Three Lions’ first Euro 2016 group clash, against Russia, is on 11 June – just four weeks after the last game of the Premier League season.

England are expected to arrange up to three pre-tournament friendlies between then and the start of the Championships.

Sanchez warning
United face Arsenal today in the Premier League (2.05pm) hoping to recoup ground on the top four.

They sit seven points off fourth-place Manchester City, who play against Liverpool in the League Cup final later today.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are gunning for the title and Alexis Sanchez says a repeat of their 3-0 drubbing of the Red Devils earlier in the season would greatly boost those hopes.

“That really was the best match we’ve played all season.

“We went out there and put pressure on them having gone out with the mentality to win.

“That day, before we all went out for the match, if you looked into the eyes of all the players you could see we all had this hunger to win.

“There was just a look on our faces that we wanted it and, when you have that, you know you’re going to be hard to beat and that’s what happened – we went out with that mentality.”

“We are obliged to win this match to put ourselves into a position where we can fight hard for the title.

“Manchester United are a very strong team with a great history of football. They have all this history behind them and it’s going to be a hard match.

“Now the focus is on the Premier League and trying to win – that’s important for me, the team, for everyone. I’m very happy here.”
